このジャンル『夜と霧』とかいろいろ、ほんまにいろいろありますが、この本は新鮮です。理由を列挙すると、
１）ハンガリーのユダヤ少年が主人公の、２）戦後の価値判断が全然入ってない、３）回想ではなく現在進行形で書かれた、４）小説であること（これは訳者あとがきにも書いてあるんですけどね）。

主人公の少年はブタペスト市内で勤労奉仕に向かう途中、のどかに集団連行され、しんどい思いをしながらもがんばって、アウシュビッツに到着します。アウシュビッツで４日間を過ごし、次の収容所、さらに次の収容所へと向かうのですが、淡々と収容所の日々が毎日の新たな発見とともに綴られます。少年らしい視点で。

臨場感すごいです。１９４５年に済んだ話には思えません。今日もどこかで進行中の!出来事のようです。まるで僕らも関与してるかのような。

この作品はすごい昔に脱稿したのに、本国ハンガリーでもなかなか出版できなかったそうです。たぶんガス室の存在に懐疑を示すくだりがあったりするからかな？そして長いこと経って２００２年のノーベル文学賞を受賞しました。
明るい話ではありませんが、面白いです。ノーベル賞作品のくせに難解じゃないしね(笑)。

　読後、これほどの解放感を味わわせてくれた作品は初めてです。それは強制収容所から故郷に戻った主人公の「運命とは僕たち自身なのだ」という言葉に象徴される神なき時代の希望がこの著に溢れているからだと思います。

14歳の主人公（僕）は勤労奉仕に行く途中に捕えられアウシュビッツへと送られるのですが、そこで３日間「奇妙な待機と退屈」な時間を過ごした後、ブーヘンヴァルト、ツァイツと収容所を転々とします。移送は彼に様々な出会いをもたらしますが、特にツァイトで知り合うツィトロム・バンディの「自分を見失わないことが大事だし、どうにもならなかったことなんて今まで一度もなかった」という言葉は、主人公にとっての「囚人生活に欠かせない知識」となります。しかし、彼にとって収容所生活は依然退屈らしく、「家にいるある一日を、朝から晩まですっかり想像すること」で時を過ごします。

やがてひざの痛みから入院した病院で終戦を迎え、帰郷します。列車から降りた直後、アウシュビッツの地獄を聞きたがる記者に出会いますが、彼は「時間」の概念を持ち出し説明します。「すべてが理解できるまで、人は何もしないでじっとしているわけではなく、すぐに新しいことに取りかかり、生き、行動し、動き、新しい段階ごとに新しく要求されるあらゆることをやり遂げようとする」と。その後、生家に戻った彼を待っていたのは、別の収容所に送られた父の死、継母の再婚、実家の喪失でした。それらを教えてくれた古い隣人は彼に過去を捨てるように言いますが、彼は「もしすべてが運命でしかないなら、自由などありえない、その逆に、もし自由というものがあるなら、運命はない」と言い、冒頭の「運命とは僕たち自身なのだ」と続けます。そして独り街に出る彼の目の前には、真の自由と幸福が、茜色の空とともに輝いている。苦悩から生まれる希望の名著です。

この本はユダヤ人の迫害・強制収容所の話だけれど、主人公の少年の思いは、今でも、そして誰にでも心に染みわたる。少年が強制収容所生活の中で感じる様々な思いは、強制収容所という地獄にいたから生まれたのではなく、自分の力で運命を「生き抜いてく」ことから生まれている。だから読んだ後も、昔の遠い国で起こった悲しい出来事という感じがしなかった。

ユダヤ人の悲惨な歴史を難しくなく知ることができる一冊。でも、その悲惨さを伝える少年の語りの中にある、少年の鋭く素朴な思いを感じる。
