タイトルがすごいが、吉屋信子の作品には処女という言葉が何度も出てくる。無粋で乱暴な男に散らされていない、清らかで穢れなく、女性本来の女性、として私は素直に処女という言葉を納得してしまった。女学校卒業後、専門学校に通う「心に要を欠いた」章子はそれまでの寮を出てＹＷＡに部屋を借りる。寮が満員とのことで、得られたのは青いペンキで塗られたにわか作りの屋根裏部屋であった。初めて自分の部屋を持った章子の満足と恍惚と寂しさが多くの形容でこってりと書かれる。そして、目的を欠いた毎日の中で、同じ寮の綺麗な異端者を恋うる思いが次第に募ってくる。二十三歳の「若書き」ではあるかもしれないが、技術で操作されていないぶん苦悩はリアル。「自分のしたいことが見つからないが、周囲に言われるまま学校に通っている」という人には時代を超えて響くところがあるだろう。そして、女性を押しのけて我先に電車に乗り込む男たちの姿が与える失望は、現代も同じ。

　大正時代の小説。復刻版。　
　乙女チックですが、詩的で、文章、物語が楽しめます。
　やや自虐的な章子が、同じ寄宿舎の屋根裏部屋の隣人、美人でクールな秋津環に想いを寄せる物語。
　なお、監修は嶽本野ばらです。註も面白いです。

＜本文から。以下、長くなりますが、こういった文章も美しく思います＞

（屋根裏）
　この一つの語彙のうちに、章子は溢れるような豊富な、新鮮な、そして朦朧とした幽暗と、そして（未知）に彩られた奇怪と驚異と、幼稚な臆病な好奇心と――の張り切れるほどいっぱいに盛り上げられて充満しているのをその一刹那から感じた。その観念の前に（屋根裏）の語音は、非常に魅力ある巧みな美しい響きを伝えるものとなった、そして美と憧憬とを含んで包む象徴的の韻を踏ませてゆくのものとなった。
　たとえば、（薔薇の花）――（珊瑚樹）――（初恋）――（・・・・・・）・・・・・
　ああ、若者達の多くの幻想を寄せるに、ふさわしいこのあまたの数々の抒情詩集の中から引き抜かれた言句にも優って更に深くつよく若い心をき乱す如き心憎くも幽遠な響と感じを発するものと――章子にはなったので。（本文から）
