5.0 out of 5 stars 「生埋め」所収の「幕屋の人形」と乱歩の「人でなしの恋」につい, 2001/3/10
この「幕屋の人形」は1930年代はじめにかかれたものである。「奥手で女性と付き合うことがうまくできないイラン人青年が、フランス遊学中に偶然洋品店のウインドーで見かけたマネキン人形に抱く不条理な恋を描く一編」（訳者石井の解説より）である。この青年の婚約者は自分に振り向かせようとして人形に似たような格好をして見せるが一向に効果が見られない。ある日青年が陶然としてマネキン人形を見つめていると、突然人形が動きはじめた。恐怖に狩られた青年はピストルで人形を撃ってしまう。ところがそれは人形そっくりのかっこうをした婚約者であった、というストーリーである。

以上から判るように、この話は人形に恋をした青年の視点から語られている。「そのすべては具象の愛をも、彼の思惟をも、その美意識をもすべてを超越していた。加えるにこの娘は彼に何を語りかけることもない。偽りの愛を語って彼を欺く怖れもない。彼を振り回すこともしなければ、嫉妬に狂うこともない。いつも黙っていて、いつも同じように美しい。彼の究極の思いと願望を具現してくれるのだ。…何よりこの娘は何も話さず、意志を表すこともない。それは大事なことだった。彼はお互いの主義が一致せぬことに怖れを抱かなくとも良かった」というのが青年メヘルダートの真情である。何かしら最近のヴァーチャル恋愛、コンピュータの恋愛シュミレーションソフトを連想させないでもないが、それらにしても上手く仮想の女性の機嫌をとってやらないことにはゲームオーバーになってしまう。それらよりもより極端な感情と言っていいだろう。

一方江戸川乱歩の「人でなしの恋」は1926年に発表されているからほぼ同時代といっていいだろう。こちらは妻の視点から描かれており、不審な夫の行動からだんだんその謎が解き明かされていき、夫の人形愛という事実が判明したことで一つの結論が得られるが、しかしさらにそれに加えて妻が破壊した人形と、夫が後追い心中をするということでもうひとつのどんでん返しが加えられて作品世界は破滅のうちに終焉を迎える。これら視点の相違が二つの作品の最大の違いであり、その他の道具立ては、男に婚約者もしくは妻がいて人形と同居しているというということなど面白いように類似している。ただ違う点といえば、イラン人青年メヘルダートは上述のように人形が人形であるということに愛情を抱いていたのにたいして、「人でなしの恋」の門野は「人形のために女の声色を使っていた」というように、人形に人間を仮託していたことである。メヘルダートは移ろいやすい人間の心そのものに嫌悪感を抱いていたからであり、一方門野は単に妻に出会う前に理想の女に近い姿形の人形に出会ったからにすぎない。もしそれが実在の人間であったなら門野は素直に彼女と恋愛をしていただろう。この点からいうと「幕屋の人形」のほうがより虚無的であり、かつ非人間的であるという点を考えれば、「人でなしの恋」よりもより現代的都会的と評してもかまわないであろう。

最後になるが、この短編集「生埋め」には「幕屋の人形」のほかにもホラー小説ともいえる「タフテ・アブーナスル」や人類同時自殺をあつかったＳＦ小説「S.G.L.L.」なども含まれていて、ミステリファンにも十分お奨めできることを付け加えておきたい。
