怪異妖怪を語る際に、鳥山石燕とならんで外せない存在である絵本百物語。喜んで買い求め、一読した。非常に面白く、絵図も素晴しい。しかし同時に「どうして・・」という強い思いを致すことにもなった。原書は絵の部分と文章に分かれており、絵の部分はそのまま印刷、絵に付された詞書も改めて原文のまま活字になっている。しかし文章が、現代語訳されたものだけ。ご丁寧にも現代語訳の頁には、薄墨で頁いっぱいに原書の当該頁の影印が印刷されているが、当然活字や挿絵の地模様に過ぎず、読めない部分が多い。解題も丁寧で、造本もしっかりしているこの本だけに、原文が分からないのは実に辛い。帯に記された「オールカラーで完全収録」というのは絵だけの話らしい。このような江戸期の読みやすい文章であれば、やはり原文収録が望ましいのではないか。現代語訳はこなれていて、その質について文句はないのだが、読み物としてだけでなく、資料としての面ももう少し大事にしてほしい。実際、前に出た石燕の本では、完全な復刻がなされていたのだから。
