書かれている内容はほどよくマニアックで
鉄好きには好感を持って迎え入れられるもの。
とはいえ、のわぁんとした文体で綴られているから、
旅好きやエッセイ好きの人でも、とっても楽しく読める本。

とはいえ、中には女性専用車両や痴漢問題とった
まさに「女子と鉄道」ならではの話題も出てくる。
そういえば鉄道って、
マニアックな好奇心を満たしてくれるだけのものでも
日常を離れた旅心を演出してくれるだけのものでもなく、
多くの人にとっては、日常の一部に当たり前に溶け込んだ
ごくごく身近で、社会的な存在だったということに、
この本を読みながら、今さらながら気づいた。
だから、新鮮な気持ちで読めて、なるほどなぁと思わされて、楽しかった。

ついでに、
ローカル線乗りたさにわざわざ時間かけて出かけてきて、
肝心の車中ではほとんど居眠りしている著者に
かなり笑ってしまった。

　「茶道、華道、鉄道。女子にも乗れる鉄道入門」というのがこの本のキャッチフレーズ。「男の世界｣とされる鉄道趣味に、酒井順子が独特のタッチで鋭く切れ込む。もともと「鉄の世界」に興味があったという酒井順子が日本中の鉄道を体験したルポ調の作品。立山のナローからリニア･モーターカーまで、地方のローカル線から山手線、新幹線までと至れり尽くせり。

　鉄分の高い趣味人が読んでも結構笑える。中でも新幹線の顔の分類は、なるほどと思わせる。詳しくは本を読んでください。この本がきっかけになって鉄道趣味に幅広い市民権が与えられることを期待したい。

女子の鉄道ファン向けなのだろうけれど、ライトな男性「鉄」にとっても非常に楽しいエッセイだった。

本書の一番の読みどころは、鉄道に対する微妙な感情を、うまく言葉にしてくれているところ。まさにエッセイストの本領発揮だ。

たとえば、鉄道には「目的地まで勝手に連れて行ってくれるという安心感がある」という視点。
夜行列車に乗り込んだときのあのほっとした感覚のウラには、そんな感情があったのだなぁと強く共感した。

他にも、東京モノレールの相対的な価値の低下とか、雪深い山の中からほんの十数分で都市についてしまうことの不思議さとか（奥羽本線の話）、あちこちに「ああ、そうそう」という箇所が満載。
どんな風景描写よりも、この心理描写の巧みさが「旅気分」を高めてくれる。

濃いファンは濃いなりに、ライトなファンはあくまで軽くと、本来鉄道は間口の広いもののはず。
それを非常にわかりやすい形で伝えてくれる本だ。

もっとも、夜行で九州に行き、その日にまた夜行で帰ってくるなんてことをしている著者も、十分「濃い」気がするが・・・。
