東野による、丁寧な取材の成果ですね。
競技体験の所など、特に丁寧に取材されていて、好感が持てます。
冬期五輪、或いはその競技に関心がある人は、一読してみては。

私の場合、本題より小ネタ(?)の方が楽しかったですが……
グデングデンに酔うなよ、ナイフを持ってくな、宣伝しようとすんな(笑)、鼻の下伸ばすな(笑)、etc……
冬期五輪に対しての東野の想いがわかる一方で、笑えるネタもたくさん。
にしても、夢吉くん可愛いですね(関係ない)。

オリンピック好きの東野氏のトリノ観戦記。
愛猫の夢吉君が人間の男の子（20才前後という設定）に変身してしまった！！
そこで夢吉君は冬季スポーツにチャレンジしたり、
おっさん（東野氏）と一緒にトリノを旅したりといったファンタジー的な設計になっています。
（でもこの設定が無理矢理というか、苦肉の策にしか見えないから悲しい・・・）

内容はみたことをそのまま書いているだけ。
完全に「いちファン」の視点でしかない。
競技に真剣に向き合ったルポとは言い難たく、
あくまで「オリンピックファンの観戦記」以外の何者でもないのには少々ガッカリしました。
一応、物書きのプロなんですから、
もうちょっと迫った内容を期待してたんだけど・・・。
競技の話よりは、移動や食事の話題の方がずっと面白かったかも。

でもまぁ、軽い旅行記としてはいいんじゃないでしょうか。

6度目の候補で直木賞受賞、おめでとうございます。
その発表翌日に泥酔したままトリノ入り。

トリノまでは飼い猫がなぜか朝起きたら人間になっていて
「おっさん」こと飼い主（著者）の命令で今からトリノに
出場するために冬季五輪の各種目について実際に調べて
歩く、できればやってみる、という筋立てです。

かつてはカーリングの体験練習で大怪我をしたほど
ウインタースポーツにのめりこむきっかけが昭和三十年代
の中年さんには懐かしい「札幌冬季五輪」。

でもこの本のどのあたりに「夢」があるのでしょう？
いみじくも著者自らが「おっさん」と猫に呼ばせている通り
小心で卑属で冷酷な中年男の惨状がそのまま盛り込まれています。

作家の立場を生かして各地で取材しているのに表層的な
「見たまんま」しか書かれていないし、ひとことでいって
「不愉快」な内容でした。

昨今では素人の書くもののほうが「熱い気持ち」「夢」
「応援」「やさしさ」に満ちていてもっともっと
私たちに夢を与えてくれるようです。

タイトルと内容に著しい齟齬があり、満足できませんでした。
