ロンドン警視庁美術特捜班のチャーリー・ヒルは囮捜査の名人である。裏の人間達の真っ只中に飛び込んで、盗まれた名画のやり取りをするところは手に汗を握る。ムンクの『叫び』やフェルメールの『手紙を書く女と召使い』など、数千万ドル以上の値が付く世界的名画の奪還を果たすなど、まるで映画の中の主人公のようだ。
本書は囮捜査や美術犯罪の実情に詳しく触れていて、すごく好奇心をそそる。
それにしても、多くの美術館が非常に簡単に盗みに入られて、今もなお多くの名画が盗まれたまであり、それに対して警察は軽視をしがちであると言う事実に少なからず驚かされた。その上、有名な美術館であっても非常に少額の保険にしか加入していないというのは、いかに美術に対しての認識が甘いかがよく分かる。
ちなみに、ヒルが奪還した『叫び』は２００４年に再び盗み出され、今も見つかっていない。

囮捜査官の実態が詳しく描かれていて、非常にスリリングでした。
ノンフィクションなのにどこか小説を読んでいる感じです。
さらに、
美術品は盗まれても、ほとんどが戻ってこないということや、
美術品自体が麻薬取引等に使われているということなど、
新しい知識も得ることができて非常にお得な一冊だと思います。

「事実は小説より奇なり」というが、この本は小説より面白いノンフィクションの典型だ。主役をはじめ登場人物はいずれもキャラが立っており、美術品犯罪の実態、潜入捜査の描写などは良質のクライム・ノベルを読むようだ。エピローグの後日談も皮肉が利いている。
