以前からの平山夢明ファンとすると、同氏がメジャーに評価され発売された！嬉しい本であるが、気をつけなければならないのが、メジャー好きで、同氏の作風を知らないまま帯を見てこの本を買おうとしている人たちである。私は同氏のファンであるから内容には驚かなかったが、知らずにこの本を買った友人があまりの中身に生理的嫌悪を感じて半分より先を読めなくなった。それくらい中身はグロイです。ファンからみると以前から同氏のもつ作風のグロさ、独創性がさらに発展しており、文学的（高尚）な要素も少し加わって嬉しい。短編ばかりなのが引き締まっていて非常によいと思う。
内容は、壁につながれた巨体にひたすら人肉を食わせる男、拷問を職業とする男の拷問様々など。何度もいうが、普通の人は買う前に、同氏の作風をきちんとチェックしてから買うべし。

本作は「このミス」で選ばれるまでまったく知らなかった。というか著者も知らなかったのが。
グロテスクな描写ばかりなので、それが好きか嫌いかによって評価は分かれそう。中には星新一のショートショートを思い浮かべるような作品もあった。
本作の評価がどうかというと、人によってはっきり分かれそうなので書きづらいが、個人的には可もなく不可もなくといった感じ。ただ、この本作がなぜ「このミス」で１位になったのかだけは最後までわからなかった。ミステリーという感じはしないんだけどなぁ・・・

表題作「独白するユニバーサル横メルカトル」は確かに秀作だし、ただならぬ狂気の作品集だとは思います。ホラー好きにはお薦めします。

ただ、「このミス」１位でいいのでしょうかね？
