これまで著者が、これでもかというくらい理屈っぽい表現で、登場人物の思考と言動を描いて生きた作品と、やや毛色が異なる。感性と叙情的描写に軸足を動かしたように思う。辻仁成の作風に近づいたと言うべきか。それはそれで、楽しめるが、あの理屈っぽさがたまならいと感じている読者層から見ると、なんとも物足りなさを感ぜざるを得ないかもしれない。毎回、新作を心待ちにし、全作品を堪能している読者の一人としての率直な感想です。

大人の恋愛は、いいなと思います。だって、そこには「いくつになったから、身を固めなくてはいけない」などという規制もなく、ただ純粋にこの人が好きなんだという気持ちと多少、年をとっていくであろう姿が想像できてもそれでも好きでいられる事の素敵さというか、そんな心情には博多の街がよく似合う、本当に良く似合う。
もしも、私があなただったら・・・・こうしてほしいのではなく、本当に好きな人自身に私はなりたいと思う。今度生まれ変わる時は、私はあなたになりたいです。

東京の大手企業の第一線で働いていた啓吾は、会社の上層部との意見の相違から6年前に退社、郷里の博多に戻って小さいバーを経営していた。そんな啓吾の元に、ある日突然、もと同僚である神代の妻美奈が連絡をよこしてくる。啓吾の勤めていた明治化成は啓吾が退社をした頃にはすでに事実上の倒産状態であったにもかかわらず、その経営悪化の状態を隠すために経営陣が粉飾決算を行っていたことが最近明らかとなり、東京地検特捜部の強制捜査を受け、神代らの旧経営陣は退陣に追い込まれていた。美奈からの突然の電話に、啓吾はてっきり元同僚の神代のことで妻の美奈が電話をかけてきたものと思い込んだが、美奈が切り出した用件とはもっと意外なものであった......。
白石一文最新作。粉飾決算疑惑、東京地検特捜部の強制捜査、経営陣総退陣、逮捕・拘留など.....、いかにも最近の御時世を反映した”旬な”題材も盛り込まれていますが、ここは物語のメインではありません。あくまで第一線を退いた50歳前の主人公の、”第二の人生”がメインのストーリーです。”もしも、私があなただったら”という何やら意味ありげなタイトルに惹かれて読むことにしたのですが、このタイトルはそれほど意味はありませんでした。普通の恋愛小説です。白石作品は、「一瞬の光」、「私という運命について」に続いてこれで3作品目だったのですが、デビュー作品の「一瞬の光」の時のような、何もかも詰め込みすぎた内容盛りだくさんのストーリーはすっかり影をひそめ、「私という運命について」の”運命”について深刻に思い詰めるような主人公の姿もなく、今回の作品は非常にあっさりとしています。読みやすかったですが、逆にすこしひねりがなさすぎたかも。個人的には、博多の街がとても素敵に描かれていた点がよかったです。第二の人生を送るには本当にぴったりの街だと思わせてくれます。
