冴えない詐欺師と呑気な相棒、そこに美人詐欺師が絡んで企む計画に、自ら狂言誘拐を持ちかける少年が加わって・・・
人物造形は、いかにも有りがちなのだが、軽快なテンポで楽しく読ませる。
身の代金受け渡しの仕掛けも一ひねりある。
ラストの決着のつけ方はユーモア小説の王道。
伊坂幸太郎の「陽気なギャング」シリーズ、奥田英朗「真夜中のマーチ」を気に入った人なら是非一読を。

本書は貫井徳郎としては異色作である。“誘拐”がテーマであるが、いつもの彼の作品のような重苦しい感じや大きな仕掛けはない。今回は肩の力を抜いて、楽しんで書いたのではないだろうか。私も気楽に読み進むことができた。

高杉は、経営コンサルタントを騙っていかがわしい儲け話を売り込んだり、カード詐欺で糊口をしのいだりしているケチな詐欺師だった。彼を‘アニキ’と慕う弟分の園部がいるところなど絵に描いたような設定だ。そんな彼らにカラーコピーした名画の贋物リトグラフを売りつける美人詐欺師、菜摘子が仲間となってドタバタ誘拐劇が繰り広げられる。

はじめはある豪邸の飼い犬の誘拐を計画するのだが、下見の段階でその家の１０歳の息子、巧（たくみ）に逆に尾行され、自宅に乗り込まれてしまう。そこで巧はなんと「自分が誘拐されたことにして、吝嗇な親から身代金をせしめる」狂言誘拐の計画を提案、３人に協力を求めるのだ。

ところがその巧が本当に誘拐されてしまって、高杉たちは、あろうことか誘拐犯に代わって、親から身代金を取るように脅迫される。
かくして彼らの奮闘が始まる。真犯人の代理として親への脅迫・身代金の受け取りと真犯人への受け渡し、巧の救助、真犯人が何者かを突き止める推理・・・。ストーリーの展開はユーモアとスピードがたっぷりで、まるで軽妙なユーモア小説を読んでいるような印象を受けた。

惜しむらくは物語の前半部分にほとんど動きがなく、後半にプロットが凝縮されてしまっていることと、ラストが思いがけずあっけなかったことである。

しかしそこはさすがに貫井徳郎。狂言誘拐の上前をはねるというアイデアもさることながら、身代金の奪取方法は、きわめて現代的でよく考えられており、また真犯人の手掛かりも作品の冒頭部分にもう伏線を忍ばせている。
本書で読者は貫井徳郎の“いつもとは違う”一面を見ることができる。

二流詐欺師とドジな手下、美人詐欺師、頭のいい小学生、ドケチな父親、成金一家・・・と個性的な人達の誘拐話。巧妙なトリックとか大どんでん返しなどはありませんが、楽しんで読めました。2時間枠でドラマ化したら面白そうです。
