とても懐かしい物語が集められていて、手にした時にとても嬉しかった。特に『ゴーストハント』はどこの短編集に収録されていたのか忘れてしまい、再読できずにいた作品でした。あれは、語りの妙というか、シンプルな作品ですがあとあとゾッと怖さが沁みこんでくる。宮部みゆきの解説も読んでいて頷ける点が多かった。こういうのって、編者に対してどちらかといえば反発を覚えるものだけれど、今回は賛成できる選定だと思う。

　本書は、カッパ・ノベルスでおなじみ光文社が、2002年のクリスマスシーズンに、ギフト用アンソロジーとして企画・刊行した３冊のうちの１冊である。他の２冊は、綾辻行人による『Mystery』編と、瀬名秀明による『Wonder』編。いずれも、そのジャンルを代表する若い世代の作家をアンソロジストに迎え、個性を生かした作品選択を許した点が特徴的である。

　この『贈る物語』シリーズは、編者の意向を最大限に生かす方針で編集されている。が、それにしてもミヤベのワガママはすごい（笑）。なにしろ、収録作のひとつとして、ゲーム『ブレス・オブ・ファイア』攻略本のキャラクター紹介ページを選択してしまうのだ。これは編集者も困っただろうねえ。

　ミヤベがゲーム女なのは有名で、とくにＲＰＧは、シリーズの新作が出るたびに旧作もプレイし直すほどの入れ込みぶりだそうだ。つまりミヤベはストーリー中毒なんだろうなと思う。想像力と感受性がひじょうに強いため、誰かの身に起こったことを我が身に強く引き受けてしまうタイプの人なのだ。こういう人はロープレとの親和性が高い。「なりきれる」のだ。だからこそ、攻略本のわずかな断章から、キャラクターの人生を想像し、恐怖し、感動し、アンソロジーに採っちゃったりもするわけですな。
　偉大なる妄想家・宮部みゆき。あなたの感性、あなたの稚気を、我々は愛する。
　この本で、我々は、ミヤベを育ててきた読書体験の片鱗をかいま見ることになる。こわいこわい体験として……。
