　通常、本書のようにページ数が４００を超える本は、読んでいると、途中で飽きてくるのだが、この本は飽きると言うようなことは一切無い。一度、読み始めると、読むのがやめられなくなってしまう。
　では、その内容を少しだけ紹介しよう。
・イスラム教徒が断食の月に消費する食料は、普段の月の３倍。
・砂時計の砂の入れ方。
・雲より高い富士山に雪が降る理由。
・猫にドッグフードを与え続けると失明してしまう。
・マムシがマムシに噛まれても死なないが、コブラがコブラに噛まれると死んでしまう。
ここで紹介したのは、本書のごく一部である。どれも知っていて損をするものは無いだろう。私もそうであったが、本書を読んだ後、誰かに本書の内容を話したくて話したくて仕方が無いような気分になることは間違いない。

面白い知識を収集する集団、エンサイクロネットによる雑学書。日常のちょっとした疑問について、何故そうなのかという答えを収載している。疑問の数は650におよび、約400ページにぎっしり詰まっている。ひとつの情報は１〜３分程度で読めるが、休憩中や電車などで少しずつ読むのが適切で、数日かけて読破する分量。広い読者層を対象とし、誰でも理解可能。

雑学とは、バラエティーに富んだ幅広い知識を指し、一見仕事に関係なさそうでも、読んでみると非常に面白いものが多い。広範囲で物事の根拠や理由を知ることは、心を豊かにし、頭を使うことにもつながるので、本書の著者陣の姿勢はすばらしいと思う。

難点は、よく読んでみると疑問に答えていなかったり、信憑性のきわめて低い情報も掲載されている点。たとえば『いい大人がM資金詐欺にひっかかるのはなぜか』という項目では、その理由には全く答えていない。あるいは、『市立大学の受験料はなぜ高額か』という問いには、一面的な理由のみ記載され、大学側を糾弾するような性悪説的な解釈となっているが、高額にすることで『本気でその大学に入学する意思のある者を選別できる（模擬試験同様にひやかしで受験する者を除外できる）』などのメリットもあるはず。また、多くの説がある中で『一説によると』として信憑性の低い説を取り上げている場合もみられる。

多くは正しく、かつ面白いものが多いので、多くの説が存在して信憑性の低い情報、根拠のはっきりしない情報は除外しても良さそう。上記問題点を加味して星４つの評価。

事実かどうかは参考文献がないのでわからない。

飲み屋での小ネタとしては利用できる。
