ご多分に漏れず，小学校のときに一通りホームズ，ルパンにはまりました。読んだのはいずれも子供向けにリライトされたものでした。原作を読んでみたいとは思うものの，なかなか手にとることができずにいたのは，やはり訳文になじめなかったからでした。
ホームズものは，新潮文庫あるいは創元推理文庫から出ています。早川にもありましたっけ。でも読みきれないんです。
それで，この2月に光文社から出た新訳です。訳者の日暮さんはまだお若い方ですが，多くの贋作の翻訳を手がけておられ，ホームズに関しては表も裏もご存知の方です。そういったことを知っておりましたので，訳者の名前を見て期待をもって購入しました。文章は期待通り，非常にこなれており，一つ一つの作品を安心して，味わって読み終わることができました。それにしても，こんなにホームズの作品って面白かったんですね。もちろんリライトされた作品も面白かったですけど，原作の持つ雰囲気は格別です。

「シャーロック・ホームズの冒険」は、子供の頃から訳者の違う数種類のものを
読んだことがあったが、いずれも十年以上前の話。
せっかく新訳が出たのだからと、軽い気持ちで手に取ったのが本書だったのだが、
思いの外楽しい思いをさせていただいた。
時代感を損ねず、現代的になった訳も気持ちが良いが、個人的には注釈が有り難い。
日本では馴染みのない事物や制度が、とても分かりやすくまとめられている。

子供の頃から読書に親しんだ人ならば、必ず一度は手に取った本ではないかと思うのだが、
本書で新たに読み直してみるのも一興ではないだろうか。
少なくとも私の場合は、イギリスの文化や歴史への理解を深める一助になったし、
大好きだったホームズシリーズへの再入門の書として、うってつけのように思われた。

確かに現代語になって読みやすくはなったと思う。しかし、その一方でホームズ独特のあの格調高さといおうか、文章から滲み出るロンドンのあの時代の空気というものも薄まってしまったように感じる。
現代語訳は、やはり現代にこそあっているもので、ホームズの書かれた時代には、それに近い
硬質な古めかしい文体こそが、似合っているように思う。
