~アイルランドの伝承に基づいた、奇怪な話が繰り広げられており、非常に臨場感あふれる文章で、どんどん引き込まれる。ついでにアイルランドの土地、歴史、言葉にも触れることができ、そちらの意味でも非常に興味深い。著者は高名な研究者だそうだが、その知識が魅力いっぱいにちりばめられている。~~
バリィヴォーニー(地名)、ティンカー(鋳掛け屋)、ケーリィ(ダンスのお祭り)など、伝統音楽の曲名やダンスとして出てくる言葉も多く、親しみが持てる。

後書きには、アイルランド人作家の名前が列挙してあり、これをとっかかりにアイルランド文学に踏み込んでみてもいいかなと思った。~

本書はケルトの伝承や伝説をもとに描かれたゴシック・ホラー短編集。で、不思議だったのが現代を舞台にしてて何故にゴシック・ホラーなのかってことだったんですが、読み進めていくにつれてその疑問は消えさりました。
最初の数編はまさしく現代を舞台にしたものだったんですが、その後に続く短編では、過去のアイルランドを舞台にしたもの、現代でありながら過去の出来事が主軸にすえられているもの等がありました。これらの短編は、まさしくゴシック・ホラー。霧深い幻想の国アイルランドの悲哀に満ちた歴史がくり返し語られ、おぼろげにしか知らなかったゲール民族の歩んできた悲惨な過去が見事に再現されています。ホラーとしても本書はなかなかの成果をあげています。特に背筋が寒かったのが「髪白きもの」。この作品は怖い。ビジュアル的にも因縁的にもパーフェクトな作品でした。
というわけで、アイルランドの歴史を知る上でも最適の一冊であり、ホラーとしても最上の短編集でありました。

ヨーロッパの童話や昔話、あるいはギリシャ神話などは本や映像でよく紹介されるが、
アイルランドの民話・伝説をまとめた本に出会ったのはこれが初めてだ。
読んでいくとバン・シイ（死の泣き声を上げる女）やプーカ（邪悪な小悪魔）、
ドゥルイド（智者）、邪眼のバラー（片目の死の神）など、どこかで聞いたことの
あるような名前がずらりと並び、アイルランド民話が元だったのか・・・と気付かされる。
幽霊や呪いなど、背筋がゾクっとするような怖い短編を読むうちに、アイルランドの
神々や妖精が息づく世界に徐々に引き込まれてしまった。
怪談とともにくりかえし語られる、イギリスの残酷な植民地政策についてのくだりも、
作品に現実味と物悲しい雰囲気を加えている。

「怪談」でラフカディオハーンが日本の伝統的な文化の一部を世界に紹介したように、
「アイルランド幻想」はアイルランドの歴史と文化を垣間見せてくれた。
