文庫化してたんで速攻買って、ほんと今更ですけど読みました。
「神様から一言」で萩原浩に触れた俺としては圧倒される思いです。
合わせて「メリーゴーランド」も買って読んだんですが、
軸がブレてない。そう思います。
正直まったく別次元の話なのに芯は同じというか…

主人公に力があります。
自分を哀れんだりした作品の書き方をしてない、
主人公が悲劇のヒーローを演じてない。
言い方が悪いかもしれませんが、
自分の体が腐って土に返っていくのを客観的に見つめた。
というような描き方、そこに事故憐憫はない。
そこがまたこの作品をすごいものにしてると思う。

読者を泣かせるためにあえて泣かせるような描き方をしてない
そんな作品なのにもかかわらず、
電車ん中でラストまで読んだ俺は涙をこらえるの必死でした。

すごい

内容についてある程度の予備知識はあったので読むのが怖かったのだが、
センセーショナルに恐怖を煽るような描き方ではなかったのでホッとした。
いや、むしろ老いよりも速やかに、淡々と日常に忍び寄ってくる怖さは上か。
いずれにしろ物忘れを意識する年齢になるとドキッとする箇所は多い。

しかし、終盤からラストにかけてはみごとだった。
ラストこそ本当の戦いへのスタートに過ぎないのだが、それでもしみじみと
温かいものが流れる。

記憶という、個人にとって最大にして唯一の人生の証を失くそうというとき、
それでもどうしても残したいものとは何だろう。

主人公の病気が進行して様子は、むしろこちらが恐怖と焦りを強く感じるほどの具体性と一つ一つの緻密な表現に、現れ、主人公とともに、アルツハイマーの進行に戸惑い、焦り、恐れている自分にに気づきます、
また、そうなったときの周りの様子が実にリアリティを持って現れています。
ラストのシーンは何度も読み返し、その山奥の秘の光とにおいさえ伝わってくるようなのが象徴的で、その中で、暖かく光る人のこころの優しさと愛を感じたとき、涙を流さずにいられませんでした。
記憶をなくしても、また、あえたこと、妻への愛を持ち続けていることができた人間への讃歌として終わっています。
