1948年愛知県生まれ。’78年「変調二人羽織」で幻影城新人賞受賞。’81年「戻り川心中」で日本推理作家協会賞(短編部門)を受賞。’84年には『宵待草夜情』で吉川英治文学新人賞を、『恋文』で直木賞を受賞した。ミステリー、恋愛、ホラーと作品は多彩。’96年には『隠れ菊』で柴田錬三郎賞を受賞した(本データはこの書籍が刊行された当時に掲載されていたものです)

本書は、連城三紀彦の初期を代表する＜花葬＞シリーズ全８編のうちの３編と、ユーモア・ミステリー連作「陽だまり課事件簿」を併録しての復刊である。

まず＜花葬＞シリーズ３編である。３編が３編ともそれぞれの時代背景が、現代ではなく、明治・大正・昭和初期と絶妙の設定になっていることが大きいと思う。ここからすでに読者は連城三紀彦のフィールドで勝負されているのだ。

そして、世間に知られているうわべの情報が切々とうたわれる。
−女たらしの男に妹を弄ばれた兄の復讐「花緋文字」、
−政治家の妻と書生の道ならぬ恋、そして心中「夕萩心中」、
−報国の情が嵩じた末の軍人の自害「菊の塵」、

実はこれらは、作品でいうと、連城三紀彦ならではの流麗なレトリックの前哨戦とでもいうべき段階で、そこからさらに研ぎ進められて初めて驚くべき真相と、大どんでん返しが見えてくる仕組みになっているのだ。私はいずれもすっかり幻惑されてしまった。
＜花葬＞シリーズは、「戻り川心中」など、残る５編を加えて全８編、まさに日本のミステリー史上に残る傑作だと思う。

次に「陽だまり課事件簿」の３話だが、ユーモア・ミステリーとされていて、一応登場人物たちが個性的だったり、会話や設定がウイットに富んでいたりしているが、ミステリーとして伏線もしっかりしているし、解決も論理的に纏まっているし、それなりに十分楽しめた。

◆「菊の塵」

　　明治の世に、武士道を貫こうとする夫婦の物語。


　　病床に縛られ、屈辱の日々を送っていた元軍人の夫の死から浮かび上がるのは、
　　歴史の闇の底でくすぶり続ける人の妄念と業です。


　　歴史的事件を背景にした大胆不敵なトリックも、犯人の切実な犯行動機と
　　不可分に結びつき、十分な説得力と言い知れぬ余韻を生んでいます。



◆「花緋文字」

　　離ればなれにされていた、血の繋がっていない兄と妹が再会した。

　　芸者となっていた妹は、婚約者のいる兄の友人と、
　　禁断の愛に堕ちることになるのだが……。


　　ミステリにおいて「禁じ手」ともいわれていた趣向に取り組んでいますが、
　　もちろん、アンフェアにはなっていません。

　　そして、犯行が発覚するよりも、動機を知られたくないという
　　歪んだ犯人の心の在り方は、現代においては決して虚構のなか
　　だけのものとは言い切れず、一歩間違えれば、誰もが陥ってしまう
　　かもしれないという恐れを抱かせます。



◆「夕萩心中」

　　政府高官の妻・但馬夕と、その家の書生・御萩慎之介との
　　不倫の愛から起こった心中事件の謎。


　　「夕」と御「萩」の心中ゆえに「夕萩心中」。

　　しかし、本作における「萩」という言葉には、他にも
　　さまざまな意味や想いが塗り込められているのです。

　　「菊の塵」同様、男女の物語の外側に背景としての「歴史」があるのですが、終盤で
　　それを鮮やかに反転させていく洗練された手つきは、著者の真骨頂といえます。
