色川 武大
1929年東京生まれ。雑誌編集者などを経て文筆活動に入る。’61年「黒い布」で中央公論新人賞、’78年『離婚』で直木賞、’89年『狂人日記』で読売文学賞を受賞。また阿佐田哲也名義で『麻雀放浪記』等のギャンブル小説を多数発表。’89年逝去(本データはこの書籍が刊行された当時に掲載されていたものです)

豆、玉子、フライ、蕎麦、カレー、大食、酒、ダイエットなど
普通の場所で食べた普通の食べ物と食べ物にまつわる回想だ。
普通の話しを普通に話されても共感は呼ばないが、普通に見え
て普通でない、さりげない名文が本書を読ませるのだ。
色川武大を名文章家に挙げる人は寡聞にして知らないが、私は
彼を現代名文章家中に加えることにいささかの戸惑いもない。

レストランや美味しい食べ物を紹介するというよりは、食べ物を巡る身の周りの出来事や想い出が書かれたエッセイである。著者もあとがきで触れているのだが、食欲は旺盛で何でも“ガツガツ”食べる。

医者から“いいのは胃腸だけ”と言われた著者は、ある日ジャガイモコロッケが食べたくなる。でも脂肪が良くないと言われているので、コロモのないコロッケを作って食べる。要するに卵やパン粉をつける前のタネである。その姿を想像するとなんともいえないおかしいのだが、著者の数々の病気を思うとチョット哀しい。彼がこだわるのは、ご飯、豆等の日常の食べ物なのだがそれが如何にも彼らしい。著者（色川・阿佐田）の作品の多くを読んできた私もそうでなきゃと思ったりもする。

私はソバの美味しさを記した「ソバはウドン粉に限る」が読みたくて長年この作品を探していた（マーケットプレイスで買おうと思えば買えたのだが…）のだが、期待を裏切らない本当に著者らしい作品であった。そう、ソバはウドン粉に限るのである。

この作品はエッセイであるはずなのだが、「大物喰らい」のように著者（この場合あくまで色川武大であるが）が書く私小説に仕上がっているかのような作品もあり、色川武大の世界がいっぱい詰まったエッセイである。ファンならずとも読んで損はない。

　1984年に潮出版社から出た単行本の文庫化。
　食べ物について書き散らした21編。気楽な調子で書かれているのだが、食に関するわがままや細かいこだわりが伝わってきて、楽しめる一冊だった。食へのこだわりは、うっかりすると嫌らしさとか卑しさが出てしまうものだが、きわどいところでバランスを保っている。
　それにしても、身体を壊しても食べ続ける執念は凄い。結局、この文庫版の出る前年に急逝してしまうわけだが。それでも、食やギャンブルを心ゆくまで楽しめた人生だったろうと思う。
