5.0 out of 5 stars 正義の執行という悲痛, 2004/2/26
念力放火能力という超能力を使える主人公を用いることで、
宮部氏は「法の裁けない悪を正義の名に基づいて裁く」
という耳に心地よい命題の苦痛をえぐり出した。

確かに処刑されても仕方がないような罪を犯すものがいる。
次々とその手にかかる犠牲者もいる。だが、十人の殺人鬼を
処刑できるなら、一人の無実なものを巻き添えにしても良いのか。

処刑者が暴走するならば、誰がそれをチェックするのか。

宮部氏の意図は答えを出すことではない。命題に正面から向き合って
生を燃焼させるものを生き生きと描き、読む者を捕らえて放さない。

以前矢田亜希子主演の映画を見てまぁまぁの評価だったので原作は気になりつつも避けてきました。読み終わった感想ははっきり言って最高！　中だるみもなく一気に読めます。宮部さんの作品の中でベスト３には入りますよ。なんとも切ないところとか強いけど弱い相反する気持ちが涙を誘います。「龍は眠る」同様これは超越したラブストーリーだと思います。宮部さんの頭の中と感性は無限です！さらに好きになってしまいました。

最初は犯罪者だからといって躊躇いを覚えずに焼き殺す淳子に感情移入し難い印象を受けたが、読み勧めていくうちにその理由も納得できた。

「あたしは装填された銃だ」の一言に、異端の力を得てしまったばかりに与えられた過酷な運命と、己を武器として認めている精神とが織り込まれているような感じがし、特別な存在であるがために人を避け孤独に陥っていた淳子が、最後にあんな形ではあるがきっと幸せな最期を迎えられたのだろうと思ったとき、心にこれ以上無い切なさを覚えた。

犯罪者は処刑する。それが正しいのかどうか迷い始めたとき、そして木戸に逢って大切な人を得たとき、やっと「武器」から「人間」としての「戦闘」を始めたときが淳子のスタートだったのに、と思う。
