今回の事件は、いわばありふれた事件を並行させることにより、
エンターテインメントというより社会派小説の趣を強くしている。
クライムノベルという観点もあり、
さまざまな読み方が出来る小説に仕上がっている。
今までは、事件そのものが派手であり、
鮫島にもスーパーヒーロー的な感じを受けていたが、
今回は、事件が地味なことと、
甲屋はじめ、警察外の人とのやり取りから、
鮫島が長幼の序を身につけた常識人であることが
強く浮き彫りにされている。


新宿鮫のシリーズにしては、地味という方もいらっしゃるのだろうが、
鮫島の人間性が出ている、隠れた名作であると思う。
奥付きを見ると、あまり売れていないようだが、
未読の方は、ぜひ読まれることをおすすめする。
リアリティという面から見れば、シリーズ最高傑作ともいえよう。

新宿鮫シリーズの第５弾
この作品は、シリーズ中で少し趣が異なる作品といってよいかもしれない。本編は、売春婦連続殺人とラブホテルの連続放火をサブの事件とし、メインは、外国から偶然持ち込まれた「炎蛹」の行方を追うというものである。
「炎蛹」が孵化することによって国内の稲が全滅するという設定なので、確かに重大な案件なのだが、過去の４作で鮫島が追った事件のイメージとも異なり、犯罪のスケールが小さく感じた。面白い作品で十分に楽しめるのだが、このミスなどの一般的な評価が、他のシリーズ作品と比較して低いのは、このあたりに理由があるのかもしれない。

読み始めたら止まらない、という面白さである。
これは、複数の犯罪が縺れ合い、一つの糸を解くとそれまで絡み合っていた糸がきれいにほどけて行く爽快感を醸し出している。
同じシリーズでも一作毎にプロットを変え読者をあきさせない工夫がされている。
何作読んでも飽きが来ないのである。
