生まれながらに超能力を持ち合わせた人たちが主人公として綴られる短編集です。

予知能力、念力放火能力（パイロキネシス）、そして心を読み取るをもったそれぞれの女性たち。
共通するのは、その能力故にその身が決して幸福ではないこと、むしろ不幸であるといえる。

小説的には、ＳＦ小説として位置づけられるのだろうが、能力者の悲哀を存分に描ききった鳩笛草を含め能力者の人物像の描写と物語の構成はさすが宮部みゆきだと思わされる。
それぞれ、手ごろな短編３つですから、是非手にとって読んでみてください。
３編それぞれ違った後読感が得られますよ。

それから、「燔祭」は、長編小説「クロスファイア」へつながる重要な話なので、クロスファイアに手をつける前に是非読んでおいてください。
余談ですが、「燔」にはたきぎを燃やしすという意味があるようです。なるほど、感じ入るタイトルのつけ方です。

特殊能力者の話が３編とも本当にきれいに描かれていて，読み終わって満足した一冊でした．特に「燔祭」は，映像的な描写がすばらしく，大変印象的でした．

中の一編燔祭は、クロスファイアの前編です。クロスファイアは映画にもなったのでお読みになった方も多いと思います。しかし、それだけ読むと、ちょっと不明な点が出てくると思うので、まずこの本を読みましょう。
