読み始めた当初は東野圭吾にしては単純なストーリーと思ったけれど、後半から人の悲しさとサスペンスが織り交ざった、彼らしさが出ていたように思います。

女性の私から見ても東野圭吾は女性心理を上手に書ける数少ない男性作家です。この作品に書かれている主要な女性の心理、そして得体の知れない不気味な「毒グモ」「怪物」と呼ばれた娘の心理さえ切なく書かれています。

　単行本で刊行されたのが1992年で、文庫版の初版は1997年。その文庫版には、若い日の東野圭吾の爽やかな素顔が載せられている。本書『美しき凶器』は現在も28刷まで版を重ねている。「爽やかさ」から男性としての「渋さ」を醸し出した彼の写真もまた読者の注意を惹くことであろう。但し、内容は爽やかさとはきわめて対極にある。一貫してぞくぞくとした恐怖心を植え付けてくれる。登場人物の一人における心の闇を描いた箇所が端的に示しているように、「恐怖と快楽とは紙一重」なのだ。

　読み進めれば直ちに分かるように、表題『美しき凶器』とは、ある外国人女性のことを指している。むろんただの女性でない。肉体的に洗練化されたサイボーグと称してよい（映画『ターミネーター3』に登場した女性を思わず想起したが、その女性のきちんとしたモチーフは存在するらしい）。「主人」を殺害された復讐を果たすべく、全く手段を選ばない彼女の言動はたしかに常軌を逸している。じわりじわりと追い詰められてゆく男女併せて4人の心境を察すると、生きた心地がしなかったであろう（一人だけそうでない人間がいた。その人物の密かな計画も見物だった）。

　彼らは元トップアスリートであるが、選手としての追い詰められた状況から禁断の○○に手を染め、それは結果的にその後の人生の歯車を確実に狂わせてゆく。かつての栄光は実は「虚構」に過ぎず、それを真に悟ったときには自らの「死」を代償とせねばならないというわけだ。本書の背景にあるのは、そんな儚く悲しい人生模様の赤裸々な活写ではないのか。とはいえ、そのサイボーグと称された女性が最後の最後で発したセリフは実に人間的であった。東野作品は全体としての読み応えとともに、情緒的なエンディングを多用する印象が私にはある。だから彼の作品は途中で頓挫してはいけないのだ。「時代性」を反映した作品であることも見過ごしてはならないだろう。

とりあえず読み始めると止まらない。読んでいると恐怖で読むのをやめたくなるが先が気になるので読み続ける…の繰り返しだった。最終的にタランチュラが一番の被害者であり犠牲者だったように思う。純粋なうえの行動だったのだなと思った。彼女が可哀想で仕方がない…
