娯楽色の強い大藪作品群だが、「野獣死すべし」は違う。鮮烈なる姿を見せながらも、静かなハードボイルドだ。松田優作の映画版ではキャラクター像こど違ったが、雰囲気は原作そのものである。テーマ曲もぴったりであった。

伊達邦彦がただのタフな野獣ではなく、青春を迎え、成長過程にある男だ。人物描写が圧倒的に違う。
その調子が続き、銃撃戦のシーンもシリアスに描かれている。「復讐篇」「渡米篇」ではその調子から脱しているが。とくに「渡米篇」ではフィリップ・マーロウやリュー・アーチャー、マイク・ハマーまでブッ倒し、闘う前からアーチャーに「おそろしくタフな奴らしいな」と感心(?)させていた。

拙者としては「野獣死すべし」の雰囲気もそれ以外の大藪作品の雰囲気も好きだ。しかし、本作は燦然と歴史の中で輝いているのは事実。これをあの時代の中で書いた大藪春彦は凄い。

当時、早稲田大学の学生だった大藪の処女作だが、その後の大藪文学の基本ラインが完成されており、いかに氏が早熟な才能を秘めていたかがわかる。まあ、プロットは粗削りだし、若書きゆえのぎこちなさと鼻につく美辞麗句はあるものの、鬱屈した青年のマスターベーションだけにとどまっていない。
伊達邦彦を通して、大藪には身体の内側に充満する静かな怒りがみなぎり、人にすがることをあきらめたニヒリズムが伺える。
本書の文体は特に二十代青年特有の、触れれば切れん尖鋭化した精神状態が顕著に見て取れる。男なら誰もが経験するそれではない。支配者に飼われるかわり、長生きを約束された家畜化した人では縁遠いだろう。迫害されてもいい、たとえ太く短い生涯だとしても、狼としての孤高をめざす途上であらわれる症状だ。
その爆発しそうなエネルギーのやり場をどこにぶつけるかが問題だ。
生と死が隣り合わせのレーサーや登山家になる者、芸術にぶつける者、出世しトップをめざす者もいる。なかには捌け口を見つけられず（あるいは実現できず）、『自爆』してしまう者だってめずらしくない。
本書には『快楽』における名文がある。尖鋭化した青年がこれから先、どう生きるかのヒントが隠されているように思えてならない。
「現世の快楽を極め尽くし、もうこの世に生き甲斐が見出せなくなった『時』が来たら、あとはただ冷ややかに人生の杯を唇から離し、心臓に一発撃ちこんで、生まれてきた虚無の中に帰っていくだけだ。
彼にとって、快楽とはなにも酒池肉林のみを意味するものではなかった。キャンバスに絵具を叩きつけるのも肉体的快楽であり得たし、毛布と一握りの塩とタバコと銃だけを持って、狙った獲物を追って骨まで凍る荒野を、何ヶ月も跋渉することだって、彼には無上の快楽となり得た。
快楽とは、生命の充実感でなくしてなんであろうか。」

昭和３３年の発表ということが信じられないほど、いつまでも古びず、青春時代の暗い怒りやエネルギーの爆発を感じさせてくれる著者の出世作です。大藪文学のみならず、日本のハードボイルドの原点がここにあるといえるでしょう。閉塞した現代に息が詰まりそうな若者たちにぜひ一読を勧めたい作品です。
