　主人公の拓也は産業ロボットの技術者である。　不幸な生い立ちの彼は専務の娘・星子の花婿候補になるが、恋人の康子が妊娠し、責任を取るように言われ、殺意を覚える。　そんな時、星子の異母兄弟の直樹から、同僚の橋本と共に康子殺害計画を持ちかれられ実行に移すが、直樹が何者かに殺されてしまい・・・。

　私には真犯人がだれなのかなかなかわかりませんでした。なかなかよくできたストーリーです。さすがは理系出身の東野圭吾って感じがしました。

　作中に出てくる登場人物の連絡を取る方法が公衆電話なので、時代の流れを感じました。（８９年著）

やっぱり東野圭吾はドキドキする話を作るミステリー作家としては高いセンスを持っているなあと、この作品を読めば感じる。
かなり昔の作品なんで文章も初々しいが展開は最高。
唯一、不満がのこるとすると約一名を覗いて主人公含む登場人物全てが利己的で高飛車で嫌な人間ばっかりってことだな。
殺人以前に、どんだけ職場の雰囲気悪いんだよって突っ込みたくなる。

本格長編推理である。大企業の美人社員に手を出した３人の男達はそれぞれのやりかたで、出世を狙い、邪魔になった女を排除しようとし、アリバイ工作のため殺人、移動、遺棄の３段リレーを計画するが、最後にバトンをとった男は、死体が殺人を担当するはずだった最初の男であることを知り、愕然とする．．．
大企業を運営する仁科家の複雑な人間関係と、権力にもてあそばれる無力な工員と女子社員の純粋な恋愛の対比が、本格トリックに小説としてのおもしろさを添えている。小説の冒頭にロボット事故が唐突に描かれているが、その話は最後にならないとつながらない。
星５つにしてもよいほどの東野の本格であるが、４つにしたのは、警察の捜査が、読者が知っている部分をトレースしているだけのように思え、どうも冗長に思えてしまったところ。主人公の末永拓也にもっと捜査させたほうが、物語にもっとテンポがついたのではないだろうか。
