島田作品の特徴である大掛かりで魅力的な謎を、これで もかと連発。ラストまでぐいぐいと読者を引っ張ってゆ く、その吸引力は尋常ではありません。特に冒頭に置か れた謎である、電車内のトイレからの瞬間消失は、その 描写、設定、真相とも、驚異のひとことです。 それでも読後長く印象に残るのは、壮大な犯行の中に秘

められた、犯人の心の謎であり、大掛かりな謎とストー リーを通じてその肖像が浮かび上がる構図こそが、この 作品の最大のトリックでしょう。 ここに描かれる真相は、日本人が忘れてはならない、た だしあまり語られることのない、重要な歴史的事実が背 景となっていて、ラスト近く、吉敷が口にするあるセリ

この作品の根底にあるのは、戦前から連綿と受け継がれてきた日本社会の不条理さへの怒りと、その犠牲になった弱き立場の人々を思いやる島田氏のヒューマニズムである。そういう意味で本書は、純然とした社会派ミステリーだといえる。ところが、その骨太なテーマを彩っているのは、いかにも島田氏らしいケレン味に富んだ死体消失トリックと、ファンタジーの世界にしか存在しないはずの「白い巨人」の出現である。
この現実にはありえない謎に整合性を持たせて、社会派との幸福な結婚を実現させた島田氏の非凡な力量にはいまさらながら脱帽させられるが、それと同時に読み終えた後のなんともいえないやりきれなさ……吉敷刑事の怒りが胸に痛いほど突き刺さってくる。

事件部分だけを取り出して「本格」として読めば非常に面白く間違いなく5つ星にしてました。
それを無理やり「社会派」に仕立て上げようとしたせいでやや冷めます。

実にもったいないが、しかし面白い作品。
