復讐箪といえば真っ先に思い浮かぶのがデュマの『モンテクリスト伯』（岩窟王）ですが、原作の邦訳は岩波文庫で７巻もある大作で、書物として手に取るには、なかなか勇気が要るものです。その『モンテクリスト伯』に比べて内容の重みとして遜色無く、しかしながら、もっと読みやすくワクワク感を大切にしたテンポの良い作品に仕上がっています。

田中芳樹先生の作品群の中で、中国系のものに興味の無い方、登場人物が多すぎるとごちゃごちゃする、と感じる方にとっても、読みやすいと思います。

また、『野望円舞曲』シリーズ共著の荻野目悠樹先生（商学部卒）の影響もあるかも知れませんが、海商法や欧州の伝統的商習慣に興味のある初心者にとっても、全体のイメージが掴みやすい良書に仕上がっていると思います。この本を読んで商船系に憧れる！（商法では履修者の少ない）海商法分野が気になる！という効果もあるかも知れません。

私は、もう３回ぐらい読み返してるけど、面白い。深すぎず、浅すぎず。読者に人生や世界の無常を考えさせるような小説は、苦痛だ。でも、小説には何か新しい発見がほしい。そんなのにはピッタリだと思う。田中芳樹の小説は続編が必ず出るとは約束されてないから、１刊で完結しているこの本は、お買い得。

物足りない。その一言に尽きる。

学生時代に銀英伝や創竜伝にハマったファンとしては、
この『バルト海の復讐』はひたすら退屈。
海洋冒険小説としては書き込みが甘いし、
田中芳樹節とも言える、あの毒舌がまったく冴えていない。
この本の一体どこを読めばいいのか？という感じだ。

彼の著作で最近一番売れる「薬師寺涼子」シリーズも、
主人公のモチーフは明らかに創竜伝の小早川奈津子。
出版社が変わっても「アルスラーン」が進む様子は見えず、
（つーか何年止まっているんだ）
古巣・中国物も、いまひとつ精彩を欠く。

新しい、キレのある田中芳樹はもう読めないのだろうか。
あの冴えを、爽快感を、ファンは待っているのに。
