筆者の論理批判は興味深いものでしたが、詭弁に騙されることのない論理的思考を確立するためのものとしてこそ、この本の意義があると思います。基本的には論理的思考を心がけながらも、やむをえない状況（相手との間に論理を超えた力関係が働いている場合など）によっては詭弁を用いることが理想的なのではないでしょうか？筆者は本書において、「詭弁＞論」という図式を示すために、非常に明快な「論理」を用いているという根本的な事実を忘れるべきではありません。やはり結局のところ、人間にとって論理的思考というものは必要不可欠なものだと思います。

本書のモチーフは、論理的思考ははたして有効か、というものである。

私自身は、論理的思考を、議論におけるフェアプレー精神のようなものだと思い込んでいた。
だが、日常生活で論理的思考がフェアプレーとなることは皆無である。
「正しく論じてるはずなのになぜ？」というもやもやが募るだけだ。

本書を読んで、論理的思考の弱点を思い知ったとき、己の甘さに少し落ち込んだ。
無菌室ではぐくまれた形式論理など、外界に出たとたんに力の論理にあえなく潰される。

レトリックの第一人者による反・論理的思考のすすめ。論理的思考が通用する場面は、ディベートのように両者が対等な立場にある場合に限られ、実際は偏った力関係の中で説得の手段を見出さなければならない。

著者は詭弁というのが勢力のない側が使った場合にそう呼ばれるだけで、普通によく用いられていることを示す（「あなたは平和憲法の改悪に賛成ですか？」）。

その上で、定義からの議論と因果関係からの議論を両立させないほうがよいこと、論点のすり替えはより重要な問題への移行だとする意見、先決問題要求の虚偽は実際意図がみえみえで詭弁にもならないことをレトリックの教科書を参照しながら説明する。

共通するのは、議論は主張者が誰でも同じなのではなく、主張者の信条・態度・信頼度（エートス）を巻き込んだ上で説得力が生まれるということだ。これは従来に論理的思考の本ではあまり触れられず、また触れられたとしても無碍に否定されていたことではないだろうか。

著者の書き方がすでにレトリックの教科書のようになっていて面白い。新書で紙幅が限られているためだとは思うが、トピックが少なくて物足りないので、もう2,3章くらい多くてもよかったと思う。
