二〇〇三年八月にパリで行われた世界陸上で、末續慎吾は男子二〇〇メートルで銅メダルを獲得した。（中略）
しかし肝心の決勝レースでは不可解な出来事が起きた。八人の決勝進出者が「位置について」の号令でスタートの位置につき、精神を集中させているときに、競技役員が末續に注意を与えにいったのである。映像で判断する限り、スタートの足の位置が問題のようで、末續は仕方なく左足のブロックを約一〇センチ下げ、スタートすることになった。（中略）

「誤審」にスポットを当ててスポーツ界の問題点をわかりやすくひもといてくれる本です。
　

　私はアテネオリンピック閉幕直後にこの本を読んだので、とても興味深く読むことができました。アテネオリンピックでもレスリングで信じられないような誤審があったり、体操やシンクロなどでは「何故？」と思うような採点があったり…。その原因がどういうところにあるのかということがよくわかりました。そして、この本のいいところは「誤審の傾向と対策」についてまとめられていることです。ただ今までに起こった「誤審」という事実だけでなく「傾向と対策」にまで踏み込んでいることが、この本をより一層興味深いものにしていると思います。

根っからのスポーツ好きの方はもちろん、アテネオリンピックでにわかスポーツ好きになった方にもおすすめの１冊です。

スポーツの世界では避けられない「誤審」。オリンピックやＷ杯のような大舞台で起きてしまった誤審であっても、その時はメディアで大騒ぎしても、結局はその当事者（国）以外は年月が経てば忘れてしまうものである。だから、この作品のように、世紀の誤審といわれる判定を、それがおこった背景とともに一冊の本にまとめた意義は大きいと思う。

しかし、参考文献の少なさに象徴されるように、内容は一面的で浅い。そしてその文献も日本のものだけで、当事国で出版された文献を調べているわけではない。サッカーなんか文献はいくらでもあるだろうと突っ込みたくなる。

さらに、柔道の篠原選手など、関係者の発言もある程度は記されているが、誤審について著者が深く突っ込んだ取材したようすはない（選手が答えづらいのはわかるが…）。よって、著者が提言している誤審への対策と傾向も、深い考察にもとづくものとは思えない。

悪く言えば「やっつけ仕事」といえそうな作品だが、最初に触れたとおり、様々なスポーツで起こった「誤審」についてまとめて読むことができる著作は、たぶんこれ以外にないので、読んで損はないと思う。

ソルトレイクシティの採点協議の問題、ラグビーはなぜ
強豪国に勝てないのかなど興味深いテーマをわかりやすく
掘り下げており非常に面白い。
