インドには不可触民と呼ばれる人間扱いされない人間の層がある。その比率は全人口の８５％に及ぶ。
近年はIT革命や世界のバックオフィスなどと注目されるインドであるが、その社会を知るにはヒンドゥー教とカースト制度、そしてカースト制度により抑圧される大多数の不可触民の実態を知ることは必須である。

３０年以上インドを活動の場としてる著者が社会で活躍する様々なタイプの不可触民のリーダー格の人々への取材を通して、不可触民の現状を描こうとしたものである。不可触民もインド独立後は学校や公務員の指定枠を使い次第に活躍の場を広げてきた現状を表現するには最適の題材であろう。ひたすら煮抑圧されているだけの古いイメージの不可触民でなく、自分たちで世界を切り拓く新しい不可触民の姿を描くことを主眼としているため、不可触民の抑圧の現状は後景に退いてしまった感がある。それでも不可触民たちが様々な社会制度を利用しながら少しずつ活躍の場を広げてきた過程を紹介する作業は現代人類社会において大きな意義を有することには変わりない。

インタビューを主体としているため著述に散漫な印象も否めない。話が暗黙の了解で進んでいる部分が多く、読み解くのに苦労する箇所もいくらかあった。さらにそれぞれの章ごとに違ったタイプの不可触民を取り上げているため、全体としての統一感が今ひとつ感じられないなど構成・編集上の課題が多く見受けられる。

どなたかのレビューにもある通り、随分と粗い内容の本ではあるが、その分様々なインドの身の上話を聞くような感じで気軽にさっと読める。主張が一方的なのも読んでいればあまりにもあからさまなので、むしろ問題は無いと思う｡インド＝カースト制、以上の知識が無いに等しい私としては、十分新しい発見があった。教科書問題じゃないけれど、インドの歴史を習う時にガンジーだけ登場してアンベードカルが出てこないのも一方的な話だ｡佐々井師の存在も知らなかったので驚きだった｡
ただ、最終章の「暗黒時代の再来」は唐突。さすがに、もう少し冷静にお願いします、と言いたくなる｡

同じ著者の「不可触民」（知恵の森文庫）は衝撃的だったが、既に二十年前の本だから、その後を知るためにはいいが、単独で読むには、ちと苦しい。ちゃんと編集していれば除かれるような重複が多すぎるし、だらだらと関係者のコメントが続いたり、書物として粗製濫造の気味がある。なにせマスコミは「今年の新刊から」などと言うから、「不可触民」の代わりに挙げたりもするが、どうもこの新書濫造時代を象徴するような本になってしまっている。本作りというものは、もっと丁寧にやってほしい。小谷野敦
