どんな妖怪かの紹介がひたすら・・・という本ではありません。江戸時代、妖怪はどのように、妖怪本や錦絵に現われたか、そして、双六、キセルの紋章などに広がっていったかが、説明されています。どのようなものに、どんな妖怪（の柄）が現われえたか？です。もちろん、妖怪そのもの（？）についても少しは、紹介されていますが、少なめです。

いろいろな文献で出てくる河童の比較、１ヶ月にわたる有名な妖怪譚など、興味深い話が載っています。

「江戸時代の人々の生活と妖怪の関わり」がわかる本です。興味深い写真が沢山のっています。白黒なのが、ちょっと残念でした。

写真も多く、気軽に読めて楽しめる本であると思います。

この本は、木版印刷に記録された妖怪を中心に紹介している。江戸時代から明治時代初期にかけて、印刷物の中で妖怪達が活躍してきた変遷を追うことが出来る。そして、印刷物だけでなく遊び道具、小物のデザイン、地方のお土産などにも妖怪達の活躍の場が広がっている。それらが、カラー口絵１２点、多くの図、写真を引用して丁寧に解説されている。妖怪が、いかに江戸時代の人々に深く親しまれていたかがわかる本である。本は薄く、わかりやすく書かれているので、手軽に妖怪の歴史を知ることが出来る。

　著者は川崎市市民ミュージアムの学芸員。妖怪の展覧会を手がけているほか、関係の著作も多い。
　本書は江戸の妖怪文化を総合的に紹介したもの。絵巻、版画、玩具などの写真を示し、大人から子どもまで、庶民から武士まで、妖怪趣味が広がっていたことを教えてくれる。出版文化についても突っ込んでいる。単なる妖怪の紹介本というよりは、妖怪を通して江戸を知るための本という感じがする。
　以前、著者の手がけた妖怪の展覧会を見に行ったことがあるが、本書はそれを本の形にまとめたようなもの。教育効果が意図されている。ただ、展覧会では実物が目の前にあり、細部まで楽しめるのに対して、本書では小さな写真が（多くは白黒で）載っているだけである。説明されても細部が分からないものが多い。また、どの話題も表面的に触れられるだけで深みがない。もっとじっくり論じて欲しかった。そういうところも、展覧会っぽいか。
