前半は著者のベルギービールへの熱い思いが伝わるエッセイとでもいうべき趣。後半はベルギービール図鑑となっている。特に素晴らしいのが後半。ぼぼ全てのベルギービールを網羅したリスト。そのリストだけでアルコール度数とカテゴリーが一目瞭然。さらに代表的な約180銘柄についてはカラー写真と味わいなどのコラムがリンクしているという大変なスグレモノ。ビール好きのすべての人の座右の書としておすすめである。

ビール界では超有名な評論家マイケル・ジャクソン（歌手ではない）の本も翻訳している著者の書き下ろし。新書にしては贅沢にカラーページを使って各ビール＆グラスが紹介されている。前から読むとビールに絡めたベルギー一般の知識が得られ、後ろから読むと個々のベルギービールガイドになっている。当地でのビア・バーの説明も充実しており、「ビール全般」「観光ガイド」「ビールカタログ」の３種を密度高く盛り込んだ意欲的な内容。コンパクトなのでベルギーにビールを巡る旅をするなら必携の１冊といえる。ベルギービールの事だけを知りたい場合は、まず後ろから読むとよい。

前半はベルギービール概説。他の国のビールと歴史、工法、味などの点でどう違うか説明があり、著者の知識と情熱が伝わってくる。続いてベルギービールのカタログ的内容をカラー写真付きで紹介。酒屋へビールを買うときに持っていきたくなります。また、ベルギー内のパブの紹介もあり、こちらはベルギーへ旅行するときに重宝しそう。ビールそのものの話以外にも、ベルギーという国の歴史やなりたちも簡単に説明されており、ベルギーについてほとんど何も知らない私には役立った。例えば、ベルギー北部と南部の亀裂がどう産まれてたのか等々。折しもベルギーが無政府状態になっている時に本書を読んだこともあって印象的な一冊。
