書斎を題材にした本はたくさんありますが、この本の面白いところは、書斎づくりのノウハウだけを詰めているのではなく、もっと大きな視点から書斎を捉えている点だと思います。例えば、結婚や子供の存在が知的退化へつながらないようにするにはどうするか、人付き合いと書斎、ライフスタイルと書斎、自分に対する投資という考え方。。。等々、なぜ書斎をもつのか、書斎の意味とは何かということをモチベートしてくれます。もちろん、書斎づくりのミクロ的なコメントも興味深く、机の配置や大きさ、パソコンの置き場所、ライトの当て方、目の疲れない本の読み方などなど、楽しくあっという間に読めました。ちなみに、この本は男性だけに向けた書籍ではありません。書斎は「男の夢」などと言われることもあり!!ますが、女性や主婦の方々が読んでも十二分な知見を得られることと思います。

はじめに、筆者は結婚が知的退化につながらない様に強く呼びかけている。そして特に、ビジネスマンが帰宅後に創造的空間と時間を持つためにはどのような点に気をつけるべきかについて有益な示唆を与えてくれている。 例えば、長時間本を読んで目を疲れさせない 照明方法や書見台の利用についてなどである。 私もこれを読んで早速、書見台を購入してみたが、

正直なところ、慣れるまでには少々時間がかかりそうである。その他「日記」や「出世」についての筆者のコメントが面白かった。

あるレビューにも書いてあったが、全てにわたって著者の断定的な言い方が気になる。所詮、読書界においていわばテレビにおけるタレントのような存在の人と見受けた。何でも出来るような自信に満ちているような。ただし、私は書斎に籠もってばかりいて一体何のためにと感ずることが多いのだが、「書斎をもつことで人生の犠牲を少なくすることが出来る」とはけだし名言でおおいに救われた。
