法句経といえば翻訳は中村元訳の岩波文庫か友松圓諦。
解説本もいろんな書き手がチャレンジしてましたが、残念ながら原文読みゃぁ分かるような話に学者らしい豆知識や自慢話、いい加減な感想文や牽強付会を混ぜ込んだ程度のものが多かったのです。
「東洋の聖書」とか持ち上げながらも「仏教学をやってればテキトーに論じられる初歩経典」くらいに扱われてきたのが現実でしょう。
むしろジェームズアレンの方が理解がまとも…でした（私見）。
しかし本書でスマナサーラ長老が自在に解説する法句経は、まさに『真理のことば（dhamma-pada）』たる輝きを放っています。
欲望や怒りとの付き合い方、日々の生活の迷い、社会システムの矛盾、人生の究極の目的まで、ブッダその人（釈迦牟尼仏陀）の息吹が伝わってくるような平易でごまかしのない訳文と、それを受けて語られる迫力ある法話に触れるとき、「一日一悟」のタイトルはけっして大げさだと感じないでしょう。
日本語で「法句経（ダンマパダ）」にアクセスしようとする時、まっさきに挙げられる一冊として、長く読み継がれることになると思います。
思い切って断言しましょう。
本書は「法句経について日本語で書かれた本の最高傑作」です。

長老の前著、「法句経一日一話」と同じく、パーリ語原典から直訳された簡潔にして力強いブッダの言葉が全４章２８編にわたって、具体的で分かりやすい長老の解説と共に紹介されている。前著「一日一話」と共に、すべての人が、真に平和で幸福な人生を送るための「道しるべ」となる本である。この本は、世に多い「生ぬるい」、あるいは「曖昧で、何を言いたいのか分からない」仏教書の類ではない。序文にもあるように、「誰でも好んで聞きたがる甘い話など人生の役には立ちません。」というスタンスで書かれているのだから。逆に、人生で正しい道を歩もうとする人には、確実に役に立つ話なわけである。この本の中で取り上げられているブッダの言葉のなかで、短いが、感銘深い一偈をあげておこう。

「学ぶことの少ない人は牛のように老いる。彼の肉体は肥えるが、智慧は成長しない。（152）」

ブッダの言葉を学びましょう。前著の「法句経一日一話」もお勧めします。

初めて法句経というものを読みました。
他の本と違って、この本はどの章からでも読める構造になっています。
なので、私の場合は好きな章からランダムで読んだほうが、スムーズに頭に入りました。
おすすめします。
