詳細なインタビューや、著者の確固たる観察眼に基づき、プロ野球選手にとっての人生の岐路について描いた秀作である。

プロ野球選手である以上、一般人より遙かに優れた才能を持っていることは当然である。しかしながら、その中でも才能を開花させ一流と呼ばれるのは一握りの選手たちであり、その才能を開花させるには、本人が自分を冷静に客観視できること、そして優れた指導者と巡り会うことが必要である。

本作品に登場する選手たちは、いかに自分の才能を開花させたか、そして指導者たちは選手本人が気づかない才能をいかに引き出したのか・・・。
プロ野球をより興味深くみていく上で、楽しめた一冊であった。

2003年のペナントレースが始まる前に書かれた本をシーズンの終わった12月に読みました。さまざまな選手監督が登場するのですが、取り上げ方、切り口、まとめ方がとてもうまく、飽きさせずに読むことができました。

いわゆる「ここだけの話し」で盛り上げる本でもなく、プロ野球という厳しい競争世界の中で生き残ってきた男たちの考え方が読み取れる本である。一流という人たちの生き残るための知恵、それが面白かった。何が目的か。そのための手段だったものがいつのまにか目的となっていたり、それに惑わされず、自分の生きる隙間、方法を見つけていく様は面白かった。

「銀行と野球」という著者の近著を先に読んだのだが、視点として通じるものがあり、面白かった。こちらもぜひお奨め。
