人間・生活・社会・文化・文明をテーマとした英文が全４４編収録され、それぞれに読解のための詳しい解説が施されている。受験参考書であることは当然として、今流行の時事的な文章は取り上げられていないので TOEIC受験やメディアから発信される最新情報を得るために英語を読む人向けではないかもしれない。本書はむしろ将来、評論・随筆・論文・専門書などの英語の書籍をじっくり読みたい、つまり「英語による読書」をしたい、より端的に「原書講読」したい人のために、その「一歩手前」までのレベルに導く講義をした本と捉えるのが適切と思われる。文法・語彙・解釈技術以上に、時間をかけてじっくりと「内容本位」で英語を学びたい人に最適である。『英文解釈教室』の続編だが、伊藤先生曰く「こちらの方がやさしい」ので、さきに取り組んでも問題ない。英文解釈の要点を２７のポイントに整理したまとめである、巻末の『構文と訳出』も非常に有益である。

後半に纏められている「訳出の工夫」が、とても重宝する本です。

私は受験生時代から伊藤氏の本を愛読していますが、私的にはこの本が一番のお奨めです。説明や解釈の筋道が明確で、あまり伊藤氏の著書に触れたことがない方にも入っていける内容だと思います。

　入試問題にこれほど人間臭さのある”名文”が出題されているのですか。読んでいて引き込まれる英文ばかりです。中身は人、社会、文化、世界など多岐のテーマに渡っているように思えますが基本は「人」です。受験生のみでなく私のような社会人が読んでも得るところが多く考えさせられます。

　「姥捨て山異聞」のリードで”所詮先に姿を消す敗北を運命づけられた老人が果たしうる役割は”にはぐっときました。孫の引力、入試凡人伝奇人伝、病気の効用、父の思いで、性善説性悪説、人はどう死ぬかなどバラエティに富んだ内容です。

　語学的参考書の面では伊藤先生の著書ですから期待通り解説が豊富で申し分なく構文、熟語、語、訳出法など勉強していてすばらしい力がつくだろうと実感できます。ただし、どれも読み応えのある難しい英語ですが。

　この書は懐かしき「高校英語研究」（ご存じない方も多いでしょうね）の連載をまとめたとのことです。前書きに「本格的参考書が書店から消え、軽薄短小のものが占めてきた」旨の警鐘をならしておられますがうなずける状況はさらに今日加速度的に浸透してきたような気がします。このような中でこの重厚な参考書で楽しむ（汗水流して苦しむ？）ことは誠にやりがいのあることだと一層強く思います。

　英語の学習だけに終わらず”人生読本”的な暗示をこめ人としてどうあるべきか、どう生きていくべきかを語りかけてくれる参考書を越えた「英語」の書籍です。サブタイトル　human comedy の意味がわかりました。ぜひ読みたい、学習したい英語受験参考書です。
