中学や高校で習う文法の順番に構成されたライティングの入門講座です。基礎的な問題が大半で、初級者でもこなせるように、いろいろ親切に工夫しています。ひと味違うのは、「ネイティブがどう考えるか」が逐一くわしく解説に盛り込んであること。ですから、文法の復習と同時にネイティブ発想の英文を書くコツが身につけられると思います。簡単に見える問題でも、ネイティブ発想の見地から巧妙にワナが仕掛けられていたりして、苦手な人にも得意な人もすすめられそうです。

「word for word ではなく、idea for idea を」、とプレインイングリッシュを標榜してきた著者の真骨頂。学校文法でお馴染みの各項目ごとに、英語らしい英語で表現するポイントが示される。タイトルには「入門」とあるが、著者のこれまでの「ライティング」関連の書籍の中では一番まとまっている。文法の説明でやや独創的な項目もあるが、例文と状況を踏まえて整理して欲しい。大学入試の和文英訳対策で、巷の羊頭狗肉レベルの問題集をやるよりも、こちらの『…入門』を活用した方が文法の見取り図ができていくのを実感できるだろう。

いままで英作文に挑戦したことがある人のブラッシュアップとして一番役立つだろう。しかし同時に入門書としても非常にとっつきやすい。

一つ一つヒントを与えながら構成を考えさせるので、わかりやすい。題名からしてもっと上級向けかと思っていたが充分勉強になった。

また英語的発想、単語の持つニュアンスまで解説してありこれから自分で学習していく上での指針になる。

この後ほかの作文の本で練習をつみたい。
