英語の語源に関する本は、洋書の『Merriam-Webster's Vocabulary Builder』や『語源でふえる英単語』など、いくつかあるが、本書は類書と比べ、読み物としての性格が強い。
1つの英単語に2ページを割き、たとえばカナリアなら、野生の大きな犬（ラテン語でcanis）がたくさん生息していた紀元前のカナリア諸島の話にまでさかのぼり、もともとは犬を意味した語が変化したことを明らかにしている。ほかにも、「accessory」は共犯者の意味だった、「McDonald」のMcは息子の意味だった、「girl」は少年の意味だったなど、興味深いトピックが数多く紹介されている。
取り上げられている単語の数自体はさほど多くはないが、ひとつひとつの単語の語源について詳しく述べられているので、一度読んだら忘れない。一般にはあまり知られていない話ばかりを厳選しているので、教養として覚えておくのもいいだろう。（土井英司）
