Language Mythsの邦訳版。言語学を学んでいると当然となっている前提も、一般的には「常識」ではない。そんな「常識」を一つ一つ丁寧に説明してくれているの本書である。「女は男よりおしゃべりってホント？」、「言語の難易度って測れるの？」といった分かりやすいテーマについて、論じてある。

一流の言語学者が書いたエッセーであるにもかかわらず、簡単で読みやすい。言語学書というより、「言語について話そう」という感じの軽いエッセー集。一読を薦める。

この本は、私が大学１年の時に教科書として勉強した本です。言語学の本というと大変難しく、読みにくく、しかも英語も難解だと思われる方もいらっしゃるかもしれません。しかし、ここはＤａｖｉｄ　Ｃｒｙｓｔａｌのすごいところで、結構シリアスに考えられている言語に関する問題を、少しのジョークとウィットにとんだ文章で分かりやすく紹介しています。「言語間に難易差はあるのか？」、「ＴＶは言葉を駄目にしているのか？」、などなど面白く、興味を引くトピックが満載です。さあ、英語を読む力もつき、言語学も楽しく勉強できるこの本を読んでみてください。

タイトルを含め、言語に関する神話を粉々に砕いていくコラム集。
内容自体は☆５なのですが、
アカデミックな本ではないので、結論が初めに示されず、おまけに説明が冗長なので、
読みづらいです。
