たくさんの辞書辞典が売られていますが、この本のように辞書の具体的な使い方を記したものあまり見かけないようにおもいます。 英和、和英、英英それぞれの具体的な使い方や、本の一種である辞書を読む方法など、読んでいてなかなかためになりました。

本書は英和・英英・和英辞典の活用方法、読み方を解説したものですが、読んでいるうちに、英単語力も増えていきます。例えば、「突然死」はsudden death ですが、「突然変異」はmutationであるとか、husbandを動詞に使って「倹約する」という意味があるとかです。

「ネイティブ用の英英辞典は禁物」というのには、参ったと思いました。というのは私はConcise Oxford Dictionaryを購入したことがありますし、American Heritage Dictionary のCDROMを購入したこともあるからです。しかし、定義の書き方がネイティブ用だと難しいというので、なるほどと思いました。例としてmouseの解説を挙げていますが、説明文の中にrodent（齧歯類〔ケッシルイ〕）を使ってある等ネイティブでないとなかなか理解が追いつかないというのです。それではネイティブでない人はどうすればよいのかというと、ネイティブでない人のための英英辞典がいろいろ出版されているのでそれを活用すればよいのです。(例：College English Dictionary、ロングマン現代英英辞典)

例文集としても辞書を活用すると良いというのもなるほどと思いました。昔の辞書は編集者が例文を書いていたのですが、最近は大規模な英文データベース（コーパス）を活用して用例を作っているそうです。

その他、語法に詳しい辞書（ラーナーズ・プログレッシブ英和）、語義の変遷に詳しい辞書（ライトハウス英和）、挿絵の素晴らしい辞書（ニュースクール英和、アプローチ英和）などが紹介されてあり、今度大きな書店に行ったら辞書コーナーに寄ろうと思いました。
