北方ルネサンスともいわれる１５世紀から１６世紀前半に活躍したベルギー、オランダの画家たち８人の代表作を、年代順に９点とりあげ、紹介、議論した本です。

カンパン、ファン＝アイク兄弟、ロヒール、ブーツ、グース、メムリンク、ボッス、マセイスの大きな祭壇画がテーマです。日本では珍しい本ですが、なにより見解が穏当で、文章が分かりやすく、学問的なので、最近の研究動向を知るのにありがたいものです。
ただ、最近流行の樹林年代測定によるデータは使っていません。

ときおり、「油彩による輝くばかりの明澄な色彩で、画面の前に立つと、その鮮烈な美の迫力に戦慄に近いものを覚える」（ゲントの祭壇画に対する評）のような感想がみえるので、より親しみ深く感じます。

大学の紀要などに代表したものをもとにした本ですから、どちらかというと研究書で、入門書とはいえません。欧州でこのような絵画をみたことがある人、ファン＝アイクやボッシュに関心をもっている人むけの本でしょう。美術全集などを読んで、もっと知りたいと思った人には好適な本だと思います。
図版が小さくモノクロですから、他の画集などを参照しないと、少しつらいものがあります。
