本書は前半でロールズの思想を、主に初期の『正義論』、後期の『政治的リベラリズム』に依拠しながら解説し、さらに彼に投げかけられた他の理論家たちの批判、あるいはそれに対抗する理論もまとめて解説。後半では、ロールズに限らず現代リベラリズムのその可能性と、誤謬をさぐり、論評する。

世界がグローバルな広がりを持ち始める時代の流れの中、西欧中心主義的な価値観や哲学の思索のあり方に疑問符が突きつけられた（サイードのオリエンタリズムはその過渡期の象徴的な存在なのだろう）。民族、宗教、人種、文化、価値観といった個々人のアイデンティティのもっとも深層部に位置するものを異とする者同士が、いかにして同じ人類として協調し得るか。リベラリズムおよび正義という普遍的価値の登場には、そのような時代の土台があったが故のことなのだろう。

しかし、本書が提示するのはそんなリベラリズムの可能性よりも、欠陥のほうが多い気がする。
その欠陥の主要なものの一つは、リベラリズムそのもの、あるいはその正義の論理の適応範囲の規模にかかわる問題。「地球全土を覆い尽くす一元的な正義の論理というのははたして、全体主義と何が違うの？」、ということである。
もう一つは、最終盤の方で指摘される基礎づけ主義、に対して。「こういっちゃなんだが、そもそも『普遍的な正義』なんて、未だかつて誰も成しえたことのないものが、本当に実現可能なの？それはあなたの空想に過ぎないのではない？」という疑問に、明確に応える術は、リベラリストにはないのだ。

本書は、決してロールズを持ち上げるための本ではない。彼の思索を綿密に考察し、その可能性と欠陥を丁寧に解きほぐした力作。
