従来1947年の印・パ分離・独立はインド中心の視点で研究されてきた。ムスリム連盟はパキスタン建国のため反インド、親英路線に立っていた、というのがこれまでの通説であった。本書は連盟の指導者ジンナーの真意を明らかにすることで、この通説に見事な反論を行っている。筆者によれば、ジンナーの目的はあくまでインド連邦内部でのムスリムの自治を獲得することであり、パキスタンという国家は意図せざる結果として誕生したのであった。本書は現在のインドやパキスタンといったネーションが如何に歴史的な産物であるかを明確に描き出しているのである。その意味で本書は南アジアのみならずナショナリズムに関心を抱く者にも極めて有益な示唆を提供してくれることであろう。
