しばしば、文字コードと文字フォントとコード処理方法の区分を明確にせずに、文字コードとして議論していることがある。漢字で楷書と草書では、文字が１対１対応しているとは限らないとすれば、それは、文字コードで対応すべきか、文字フォントで対応すべきか、コード処理の方法で対応すべきかを、即時に一意に決めることは困難かもしれない。
本書は、文字コードの標準化委員とMuleの開発者である戸村さんたちがまとめた文字コードに関する知見が整理されたものである。文字鏡フォントの成果と、コード処理の国際的な成果であるMuleとを合わせて議論するとよいかもしれない。
