　竹細工、特に竹籠に挑戦しようという方が竹工芸に関して全般を通して解説してある参考書が欲しいと言われたら、まずこの本をお勧めします。
　この本は竹の種類や生育環境、伐採、油抜き等の丸竹に対する知識と技術的な解説。そして加工の行程として、ヒゴの作り方、各種の編組や籠の作り方、籠以外の工芸品（ランプシェード、ブローチ、かんざし、絵、涼み台、竹人形など）の技術的な解説が述べられています。つまり竹林から工芸製品に至るまでの全ての行程の技術的な解説がされているのです。

　ただ、竹細工に限らずこの手の技術は本からだけでは理解しにくい部分があります。実際に作業を見たり、自分で作業をしたりしないと分からないことも多いのです。最近になって読み直して、「そういうことだったのか」と思うことも良くあります。ですから、必ずしも初心者がこの本を読んだからといって籠がすぐにできるということは無いということだけは念のために申し添えておきます。実習をして、本を読んで再度挑戦する。そんな使い方をすれば力強い味方になる本だと思います。
