自然界における水の循環をhydrologic cycle1といい,日本語では水文学的循環,水門循環,あるいは水循環と訳されている。本書では水循環を構成する各要素(降水,蒸発散,遮断と浸透,土壌水と地下水,河川流出)について独立した章を設け,各章でそれぞれのプロセスの基礎的な知識の記述に加え,最近の新しい研究動向や発展についても触れている。水文科学の学部向け入門書であるが,最新の情報を文献と共に加え,また周辺分野とのつながりが記述されている。日本で最初の水文学に関する講座が設立され,水文科学の研究と教育に45年の実績と伝統がある筑波大学水文科学研究室がその経験に基づいて執筆と取りまとめにあたった。本書はおそらく,日本語で書かれた最初の「水文科学」に関する体系化された教科書になるはずである。また本書は既刊『水文学』(共立出版)の姉妹版として位置づけられる。
