この本は C言語の開発者が他のプログラマ向けにC言語の仕様をつづった小冊子です。チュートリアルとリファレンスからなっています。簡潔で判りやすく、第2版はANSI規格化で指摘された曖昧な部分や新機能が追加されています。プログラマがC言語の概略をすばやく頭に入れるのには最高の本だと思います。またリファレンスは非常に役に立ちます。

但し、本書はプログラミングの入門書では決してありません。そういう目的でかかれたものではなくて、プロの研究者がプロのプログラマ、研究者向けに書いた本なのです。難しい内容ではありませんが、プログラミングの基本や基礎などのことは全く扱っていません。プログラミングの初心者がこの本を買うのは全く間違った選択です。

プロ向けにかかれているので内容がストレートで、まどろっこしいところが無く、プロのプログラマは短期間に内容を習得できます。しかも内容に漏れが少なく、いろいろな本を渡り歩く必要がありません。そういう意味でこうした本は存在意義が大いにあると思います。

この本は読む本ではなく、使う本です。
文法に悩んだら付録Aを、ライブラリに悩んだら付録Bを、プログラミングに悩んだら本文を探すと、解答が見つかります。

通読していた時には気にも止めなかった一文が、答を探して読むと光を放つ解答となります。
このコンパクトな本にどうしてこんなに？と不思議になるくらいの答が散りばめられています。

この本は初心者用ではないと言われています。しかし、逆に言うと初心者を脱した人が使った時に真価を発揮する本だと言えるでしょう。
何回読んでも定規と赤ペンが手放せない本です。

第一版と違って、この本自身が規格書にはなっていません。規格自体を読みたい人はJIS X3010を併読するとよいでしょう。

全くの初心者の時に、人に勧められて買いましたが、その時点では全く理解不能でした。
他の入門書などを読んで、ある程度Ｃのプログラムを書けるようになってから読むと、何が書いてあったのかがわかるようになりました。

よく、Ｃを始めるときにはK&R一冊あれば十分、というような人がいますが、全く間違い、というよりはウソです。それはむしろ「俺はK&RだけでＣがわかったんだぞ」という単なる自慢話だと受け取った方がいいでしょう。だから、それを真に受けてはいけない。入門者には、日本人著者によるもっと優れた、わかりやすい入門書がいくらでもありますので、最初はそっちを買った方がいいでしょう。この本はプログラミング入門者に向けて書かれたものではないので、わからないのが当然で!す!。

これはまさにバイブル（聖書）なので、実際の内容以上に持ち上げられている感はあります。ですが、少なくとも間違ったことは書いてあるわけがない、という安心感があるので、手元に置いておいてもいい本です。この手の本にしては説明もまあまあわかりやすい。翻訳本独特の妙に堅い文章ではありますが、それを補ってあまりあるものはあります。
