動物番組好きの方は、色鮮やかなインコが毒性のある木の実を食べた後、粘土を食べる様子を見たことがあるのでは？
インコは粘土の解毒作用を利用しているのだそうだ。
この本では上の例の他にも、動物が植物を治療に利用している例を多数紹介してくれる。

アフリカのチンパンジーは、ざらざらした葉を蛇腹状に折りたたんでのみこむ。

葉の表面がマジックテープになって、腸内の寄生虫をからめとって糞とともに排出するそうだ。
アラスカグマは冬眠前にスゲを食べてサナダムシを出す。
ハクガンは渡りの前に草を食べてサナダムシを出す。

ブラジルのタテガミオオカミはロベイラというトマトのような実をがっちり食べる。
ロベイラにはジンチュウという寄生虫を駆虫する力がある。

飼育化などロベイラを食べられないオオカミは、ジンチュウのために死ぬそうだ。

ヤドリバエに寄生されたヒトリガの幼虫は、ドクニンジンなど普段は食べない毒性の強い植物を食べる。
ドクニンジンを食べた寄生された幼虫は、ドクニンジンを食べない寄生た幼虫より生存の確率が高い。
（私は寄生された幼虫は、もれなく死ぬのかと思っていた。）

また治療のみならず、麻薬やアルコールの中毒、痛みの緩和、死の捕らえ方にも言及している。

精神的な苦痛を受けたマウスの方が、肉体的苦痛（痛み）を受けたマウスよりも麻薬に手を出しやすい。
ゴミ箱あさりを覚えた動物は癌などの病気になる確率が高い。
行動の自由のない動物園の動物はノイローゼや食餌に関する異常をひきおこしやすい。

これらは人間にも同様の異常が見られる点でとても興味深い。

今の人間世界は、毒や病原体やウイルスなどと敵対する思考から、さらりと受け流せるように変わっていくべきとの言は、深いものがある。
面白そうと思って読んでみて、期待にたがわぬ内容で良かった。具体例がとにかく多く、ボリューム感たっぷりでおすすめ。願わくはもうちょっとイラストや写真が欲しかった。（足りないというわけではない）

　動物たちは様々な健康法を持っている。しかし彼らの健康法も所詮は進化の途上にある永遠の未完成品だ。それを神話に仕立て上げてしまうのは人間が抱く自然への安易なセンチメンタリズムに他ならない。
