人間のこころに浮かぶイメージ（夢、空想、妄想、幻視など）、これの中に遥か太古の神話的イメージ、宗教的イメージが多く含まれるのは何故か？　これに着目し、無意識の中に人間という種に共通の「イメージの源泉」=「元型」に考え至ったユングのこれは、人類至上数奇の大発見です。　ユング心理学の中核概念である「元型」に関する論文を林道義氏が体系的に編纂したもの。　ユングの論文もさることながら、訳者である林道義氏による長大な解説、注釈も、かなり秀逸（ハッキリ言って、この林道義氏の解説、訳註が無ければ理解はかなり困難を極める）。

「人類共通の深層心理の奥底に働いているイメージ」これが一般的に世間に流布している元型の定義であるが、これは間違いである。正しくは、そういった!「人類共通イメージ」と言えるイメージを持たらす心特有の動き方、働き方こそが元型なのである。「同じイメージを共有」しているのではない、「同じイメージの源泉」を共有しているのである。　この混同、誤解されがちな点を丁寧に分かり易く（と言っても難しいが）解説している。
何故にここまで林道義氏は入魂しているのだろうか？　それは一にも二にも本書に収められたユングの論文が素晴らしいからである事は論を待たない。
夢の読み解き、人の持つ「イメージ」というものを、より良く理解したい人は必読。

『結合の神秘』と双璧をなすユングの考え方の集大成。

　深層心理学の巨匠、ＣＧユングの最も重要な著作の一つ。「性」にあくまでこだわるフロイトと決別したユングは、多様な時代や文化を超えた人類共通の無意識（共有無意識）の存在に注目、それを元型と名づけた。老賢人、グレートマザー、シャドー、など有名な元型だけでなく多くの原型について論じていて面白い。西洋と東洋さえも超えた人間の存在を深く洞察する手段となった。この本は翻訳がこなれていて読みやすく、種々出ているお手軽なユング心理学入門書よりもずっとユングに近づけること間違いなし。

　集合的無意識の論文から始まり、各元型についての論文が後に続きます。
　一度それらを通読し、訳者の解説を読んでから読み直すと理解が深まります。

　一文一文が非常に興味深く、全てが記憶から零したく無い情報を持っています。
　何度でも読み返して理解を深めようとしたくなるのは、やはりこの論文集の難解さ故
でしょうが、また、それ故に味が深く、珍味でした。

　元型を理解する上でも、教養や知識、視野を広げる上でも、是非読んでみては如何で
しょうか。
