これはクレマン氏が娘の誕生日に向けて造ったプレゼントです。小天使の鈴、チェシャ猫の笑い、白雪姫の靴下留め…次々に登場する不思議な品々。こんなものを売ってるお店が本当にあったら、どんなに素敵でしょう。まるでお伽話の世界に迷い込んだような、そんな気分にさせてくれます。

イラストとことばのほかに、彼の造ったオブジェ（の写真）がより一層アンティークなお店らしい雰囲気を醸し出しています。それぞれのバランスや配置も凝っており、1ページ１ページが額縁にいれて飾って置きたいようなアート作品。装飾や紙にもこだわりが見え、ぜひ実物を手にして欲しい１冊です。

不思議なヴィクトリア調のモノクロイラストや美しい写真の切り抜き、
作者による幻想的な挿絵がいっぱいの本書は
少女の憧れや思い出の断片を詰め込んだとっておきの一冊。
作者フレデリック・クレマンが娘のために創ったそうです。

この本は、好みが二分されると思います。絵とオブジェと、コラージュと文字、
全部まとめて一冊のアートです。だから、一枚の絵を、とても好きという人と、
嫌悪感さえ感じる人がいるように、この本も｢なんじゃこりゃ｣と思う人がいて当然なのです。
私は8年前、初版本に書店で出会って、ぐいっと引き込まれたタイプでした。
この本が置いてあったコーナーは私好みの本ばかりで、きっと店長とは感性が似ていたのでしょう。
フランス語がわからないのが残念です。
原書はきっと、もっとずっとおもしろくてきれいな本だろうなと予想できるから。
自分だけに深い意味のある物を、ブリキの缶や木の箱に大切にしまっているような人や、
他人にはぜったい見せない絵日記やスクラップを溜めている人なら、
きっと気に入るはずです。
