しっかりした記述、豊富な図版、安さ、
どれをとってもお勧めの良書。
初学者には最適かも。

詳し過ぎることもなく、かといって簡略に過ぎることもなく、ちょうど良い分量の内容を盛り込んだこの本は、教養としてイギリスの通史を知るのに最適だと思う。ところどころにあるコラムも面白く、カラー写真や図版が豊富で、紙の質が良い。それでこの値段なのだから、嬉しくなってしまう。

価格設定・紙幅の制限といったもろもろの制約を考えると、この本の内容は十分に評価できる。およそ、出版においては、この両者の制約から自由になることは、ほとんど不可能であろう。「日本人による通史」といった「したり顔」の論評は不毛である。本国のような、何巻もの分冊が許されるような出版事情あるいは読者からの需要は、日本においてはまずのぞめない。「甘い記述」というような具体的な箇所を指摘しない、それこそまさに「甘い記述」による「非難（≠批判）」は、もはや、「ないものねだり」の域をこえているだろう。「理想」とそれを具体化する際に立ちはだかる「現実」の距離を自覚して論評するべきでしょう。そういう点では、この価格、この薄さを考えると、いつまでも古色蒼然たる歴史認識(＝勉強不足）にしがみついている英文学者や社会科学者の類書と比較してみても、十分に納得できる、また信頼できる内容であると、自信をもっていえる。
