フーコーの著作を読んでいるとその博学な知識にまず打ちのめされる。所謂古典などは大学時代に全部読み終えて、研究者になってからはマイナーな近代のありとあらゆる著作を片っ端から読んだ形跡がある。それは「言葉と物」の注などを見れは推測できよう。その読書量たるや凡人には太刀打ちできないフォトグラフィック・メモリーであったようだ。その光景を古いBibliotheque Nationale de Franceの閲覧室で目の当たりにした日本人学者がいると旧知のフーコー研究者に聞いたことがある。さて本書でのフーコーの眼差しは、人類の知識史を縦断し、古典の成果を一切捨て去り、新たな知の位置づけを模索した一書である。ニーチェも、マルクスも、フッセルも、ハイデガーも、ソシュールも描けなかった知のあり方を考古学という関係性において再定義しようとする。言説と実践、この極めて人間的な倫理問題へのパースペクティヴを提供しようとする。明らかに近代の抱える問題を1968年前後に考えていたのは同時代的に極めてラディカルな社会運動の闘士であったフーコーの面目躍如たる痕跡を思想史に残した。その関係性が考古学であり、アルシーヴなのである。刺激的で10年ぶりに再読し始めている。

フーコーの著作群の中でも、その方法論について書かれたものであるし、ある分野の研究者にといっては、基本資料（かつ、すでに古典）であろうといった本書ではありますが（また、評価するなど、おこがましいのですが）、なにか、新しい事を語る時には、その語り口も重要であることを身にしみて感じさせてくれます。私自身、とても原書ではこの著作を読める訳ではないのですが（また、まじめに勉強しときゃよかったと悔やまれるわけですが）、何か＜強烈な美意識＞といったものが感じられ、本当に好きです。確かに著者は、まだまだこれからといった時期に若くして亡くなりましたが、ここまでこれればきっと本望であったのではないかと思われ、シンミリしつつ、巨匠とは、この人のことであるなぁと感慨に耽れ!!ます。
